The Learning Environment
In the Osnaburg Local School District, students are our first priority. Our purpose in the curriculum department is to create a learning environment that:
Helps all students meet or exceed Ohio's Learning Standards
Provides responsive and appropriate intervention
Promotes student leadership
Encourages meaningful parent and community involvement
Provides meaningful, real-world learning experiences
Respects individual and cultural differences
Provides a rigorous student-centered curriculum
Although the State of Ohio Academic Content Standards serve as the foundational basis for the curriculum, we strive to deepen student understanding by incorporating content and skills that best prepare students for the 21st century. The following link highlights the skills your child should know and be able to do at each grade level: https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Learning-in-Ohio
What Should All Parents Know About Curriculum and Instruction?
Standards-Based Learning-
Instruction is guided by the Ohio Learning Standards, which outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
Local Curriculum Decisions-
While the state sets standards, Osnaburg selects its own curriculum materials (textbooks, digital tools, etc.) to meet those standards.
Instructional Practices-
Teachers use a mix of strategies—direct instruction, hands-on learning, technology, group work, and independent practice—to meet diverse student needs.
Assessments-
Students take state tests (like OST, End-of-Course Exams) as well as district (like NWEA MAP Tests) and classroom assessments that measure progress and guide instruction.
Individual Supports-
Curriculum and instruction are adapted for students with special needs, English learners, and gifted students, ensuring that all learners can succeed.
Continuous Improvement- The district
regularly reviews student data to adjust teaching and improve learning outcomes.
Parent Involvement-
Parents can support learning by ensuring students are at school, reaching out to teachers when there are questions, and helping students practice skills at home.
Transparency-
Parents have the right to review instructional materials and curriculum and to ask questions about what their child is learning.
Preparation for the Future-
Curriculum is designed not only for state graduation requirements but also to prepare students for college, careers, and citizenship.
Ohio's State Tests
State achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers and life.
