EAST CANTON, OH – East Canton High School has once again been recognized as a leader in innovative education, earning renewed designation as an Ohio STEM School from the Ohio STEM Committee. The prestigious recognition, awarded on February 19, 2026, extends the school’s designation for the next five years and confirms East Canton High School as the only STEM-designated high school in Stark County.
Representing East Canton Local Schools at the Ohio STEM Committee meeting were STEM leaders and teachers Lisa Gothard and David Samblanet, who accepted the redesignation on behalf of the district. During the meeting, the committee commended East Canton for its continued dedication to delivering a rigorous, inquiry-based curriculum that prepares students to succeed in a rapidly evolving, technology-driven workforce.
A Model for Excellence
The Ohio STEM and STEAM School Designation was established through a partnership between the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, the Ohio STEM Committee, and the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN). The program recognizes schools that serve as models of integrated, real-world learning and demonstrate excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
According to the Ohio Quality Model, STEM education is designed to be inclusive and student-centered.
“STEM education is an inclusive, learner-centered approach that integrates content disciplines to drive critical thinking and solution design. It fosters innovation and career exploration through vital community partnerships.”
Schools that earn this designation must demonstrate a strong commitment to collaborative learning, real-world problem solving, and partnerships that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Empowering the Whole Child
By maintaining its STEM designation, East Canton High School continues to meet the rigorous expectations outlined in Section 3326 of Ohio law, ensuring that every student is challenged, supported, and prepared for life beyond high school.
The school’s STEM framework centers on three key pillars:
Problem-Based Learning – Students engage with rigorous academic concepts through real-world applications and hands-on experiences.
Effective Leadership – Highly skilled educators design instruction that supports the development of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
Strategic Partnerships – Collaboration with local businesses, non-profits, and higher education institutions provides students with meaningful career exploration and workforce connections.
These partnerships and learning experiences help students build critical thinking skills, develop evidence-based reasoning, and explore career pathways that align with their interests and strengths.
A Unique Opportunity for Stark County Students
As the only STEM-designated high school in Stark County, East Canton High School offers students a distinctive educational experience rooted in innovation, collaboration, and future-focused learning.
